STATUESQUE
Portraits were once taken in stone. Statues convey stoicism and a permanent representation of the human being. How would today's standard of popular portrait/selfie posing hold up to the elegance and untimeliness in statue form?
In this mini series of nine images models will be transformed into statues in popular and trendy poses to analyze how today's standards of imagery actually translate into beauty. If I were a sculptor I would actually work this concept in actual stone, but since I am not, I am attempting to recreate the effect of working in stone and achieve the elegance and permanence of that medium. There is something about working in photographs, even digital, that suggests expiration. Computers fail, things don't get saved like we thought they had or in a format that we thought they would. Printed images are subject to time and environment. Stone is too, but hundreds, even thousands of years later, we find that the Venus of Willendorf has long outlived her creator. And even though the Winged Victory of Samothrace has no face or arms, her beauty is timeless. If we were to take today's notion of beauty or popularity (the Duck Face, anyone?) and carved them into permanence, ten thousand years later would we still find them as beautiful as the Venus of Willendorf or Winged Victory?
As of December 21. 2014 this series is now complete.
