Form

I've been thinking a lot about shapes. Back in December I had the opportunity to travel to Seattle and participate in a workshop about studio lighting. It was a fabulous experience. I went originally with the mindset to learn studio lighting for portrait photography. At the time my goal was to have a portrait studio. Since then I've realized that portraiture is not my passion. I originally began taking photographs for the purpose of fine art. Now that I'm not doing portraiture anymore you would think that the traveling and expense for this workshop would have gone to waste.

On the contrary.

In this workshop I learned about a fun lighting technique called "light painting." It is pretty much what it sounds like. Painting an object with strokes using light. I've been wanting to integrate it into my workflow and I finally got to it, put my set up in my bathroom where no light can get in and started painting. My husband worked on it with me and we had some interesting outcomes.

Light painting this vase we had lying around the house has inspired me to do some more images using this technique. It also got me thinking a lot about form. How is it that we recognize form? By how light hits it. I've been inspired to do a whole series devoted to showing that form is only derived from how light hits it. And it is my hope that I can get you to look at things differently, see a side of something you wouldn't have otherwise noticed, find the beauty in that object/person/what-have-you because of it's form.

All forms are beautiful, especially when put under the right light.
