I am inspired by contrast. I love deep blacks and bright whites. I love the stark difference between the two. And I am drawn to it in photographs. It's why I love black and white photography and why, I think, I am also inspired by vintage early photography. Photographs focusing on value and light speak more to me than photographs focusing on color.
I feel they are more representative of life - metaphorically. In life we have dark moments and we bright moments. Without these differing moments life wouldn't be beautiful. The only thing is, you have to look at it in the big picture. How dull would these photographs be if there were no contrast? How dull would life be if there were no contrast? The dark moments are terrible to be in, but without them in the big picture life would not be beautiful. And how much more impressive the brightness next to the dark!
That is what overcame me when I created these. I wanted to show how beautiful the dark and the bright are, but only when they are seen together are either beautiful. These pieces are by far my favorites of my work so far.
